Community Groups We Support
Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre is home to a number of independent community groups. Some we auspice, giving them a base and support behind the scenes; others simply meet in our rooms, kitchen and gardens. Each one is run by local people giving their time to make Bass Coast a better place to live. Here are some of the groups you can get involved with.
Bass Coast Housing Matters
Are you concerned about the housing crisis? Bass Coast Housing Matters, a group auspiced by WNC, is creating local solutions. We believe housing needs to be considered by governments and the community as a social asset rather than a financial asset. Our mission is to advocate for adequate secure, affordable and environmentally sustainable housing for the diverse needs of all in our Bass Coast community. We meet monthly, and work with and lobby Council, state government and others for more and better public, social and other affordable housing. We also hold public meetings, have an outreach program, and are looking at more hands-on projects to directly help locals affected by the housing crisis. Email us at HousingMattersBC@gmail.com.

The BCRSG has been active for a number of years and had their hopes realised when, with the assistance of Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia, they were able to welcome the Ali family to our local community in late November 2022. Since welcoming the Ali family the group has sponsored two more families who have arrived in Wonthaggi and begun establishing themselves in their new home with the help of the hard working and generous group members. The Neighbourhood Centre is a welcoming space for refugees and works with the BCRSG, providing space and support to ensure new families feel cared for and safe. You may like to consider donating funds or equipment, or becoming directly involved in their ongoing work. All enquiries are welcome at bcrsg2021@gmail.com.

A local group that buys food in bulk and distributes it at a low mark up to their members. Distribution is from the multipurpose room at Mitchell House, 10:30am to 12:30pm on the second Saturday of each month. Stocklist and other information is available from wonthaggicoop@gmail.com
